Why 10% and not 30%.
The baseline discount had to be small enough that a restaurant could live with it forever.
A deep permanent discount is easy to launch and impossible to sustain. Merchants either raise their in-app prices quietly or leave, and both outcomes break the promise the app is built on.
Ten percent survives contact with a real P&L. It is meaningful to a customer comparing two similar places and small enough that no operator needs to game it.
The number had to work on the worst night of the month, not the best one.
The depth comes from the other three mechanics instead. Happy hours reach 30–80% because they are bounded in time and chosen item by item; surplus goes deeper still because the alternative is disposal. The baseline stays modest so it can stay true.
